The namesake of Marietta is an American Revolutionary War General and statesman, James Marietta. The area that now Marietta was first settled by Algonquian-speaking Cherokee in the late 17th century. In 1802, land east of present-day downtown became part of what would become Fulton County; and in 1803, when Georgia was admitted to the United States as a new country, its capital was moved from Savannah to Marietta. In 1830, three men – Colonel Robert Ewing (of Creek descent), Ebenezer Cooke (a white Methodist) and John Wesley – purchased 1 million acres (418 km²) of land southeast of town for $5 per acre ($140 million today). They named their farm "Ewingville." After becoming president of Georgia in 1847–48 and again as governor in 1850–51, he sold his share back to Cooke and Ewing for $10 per acre ($240 million today). When Atlanta began expanding rapidly during the antebellum period with new arrivals from North America—mainly slaves—Mariettta became known as "the slave town" because it had more black residents than any other city or village in Georgia. One estimate puts black Atlantans living in Mariettta as early as 1790; however, this figure likely underestimates Black Georgians who may have engaged in trade with Indians or worked on plantations outside the city limits until after 1800 AD. 2

Marietta was founded in 1802 by James Robertson and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for the Virgin Mary, who is said to have miraculous healing powers. James Robertson had been a missionary to Africa and brought Christianity back to Marietta. The first store in Marietta was built on the corner of Third and Creek Streets. In 1824, John Cagle opened a grocery store on North Market Street. In 1829, Wm. Hinton established a mercantile business at First Street and College Avenue. A blacksmith shop operated from 1830-1834 on Second Street between Church and State Avenues. In 1835, John Gadsden organized the Georgia militia under the command of General Robert Ewell Johnston and marched on Dalton with 1,500 men to take over control of Marietta from Rutherford Bickerton’s forces. Bickerton fled northward but returned south after learning about Johnston’s mission accomplished in Georgia. He abandoned his post at Dalton before marching back into Alabama with an army numbering 3,000 men where he unsuccessfully attempted to retake Marietta from Johnston’s forces in December 1835). Johnston withdrew his army some distance southeast of Dalton so as not to alarm Bickerton or provoke him into coming back South again with an even larger force; he then surrendered at Good Hope Hill (now Thomasville) on February 14th,1836 without any fighting taking place
