In 1824, Marietta residents voted to move the capital from Atlanta to their town because they felt that Atlanta was becoming too downtownized and noisy. In 1830, construction began on what is now known as the State Capitol building. It took two years to complete and cost $2 million dollars. The new capitol served as the temporary home of Georgia's government until moved to its current location in 1851. During its time at the State Capitol building, Georgian architect George Prentiss designed several important landmarks including the first public courthouse in America and Georgia's first bank branch. The city of Marietta grew rapidly during both antebellum and post-apocalyptic times due to its location on a major cotton shipping hub between Chattanooga (north) and Savannah (south). However, during World War II Marietta lost much of its population when service members left for combat overseas. Today only a few remnant families live in or visit Marietta each year.
