Marietta is a small town located in Cobb County, Georgia. It has been home to residents of the area for over two hundred years and its history can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first people to live in Marietta were German immigrants who arrived in 1825. They founded a small community called Wickenburg and began trading goods with other settlements in the region. In 1829, they moved their settlement eastward, founding what is now Marietta. The town was renamed after General Andrew Jackson when he became President of the United States in 1828. The town experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location on the Chattahoochee River and its access to markets such as Atlanta and Savannah. This prosperity led to lavish lifestyles for many of those living here, including some of America’s wealthiest families. In 1913, Marietta was designated as an official city by Governor John Ladd among others. This distinction helped drive economic development within the city and made it one of the most important cities in Cobb County. During World War II, Marietta played an important role in providing materials and services needed by both Allied forces and Axis combatants alike. Marietta is a small, unincorporated community in the northwestern corner of Gwinnett County, Georgia. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Marietta was platted on December 10, 1859 by John A. Lumpkin and his wife Susana Lumpkin from Augusta, Georgia. It originally named "Lumpkin's Station" after Captain John A. Lumpkin who had sold them land for $10 per acre in 1843. The name was then changed to Marietta on October 6, 1861 by order of Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest due to its location on the Chattahoochee River between what are now Decatur and Athens counties while also close to both Savannah and Montgomery Counties in Alabama which were then part of Georgia.[1] On May 25, 1886 Marietta residents petitioned the federal government to re-name their town after Confederate General Robert Ewell Lee because he had fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers near here during the American Civil War that year[2]. On November 1, 1886 President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making Marietta an incorporated city with a mayor and five council members as well as powers over schools, police and fire departments dating back to 1885 when it was authorized under state law as a village without any real power until 1912 when it became an incorporated city with full municipal authority subject only to state laws governing schools and police services. In 1916 construction began on what would become one of Gwinnett County's most famous landmarks –the Coca Cola Refreshment Bottling Plant located adjacent to Interstate 85/I-285 interchange where bottles are still distributed today (it opened in 1914). The plant closed in 2001 but left behind several abandoned buildings including a Recreation Building (now known as CenturyLink Arena) which served as headquarters for the Gwinnett County Council Office Complex from 1914 until 1987 when it moved into new facilities at nearby Brookwood Village Today Marietta is home to several shopping malls including MARETTA CENTER mall (opened 2001), MARQUIS mall (opened 2003), PINELLAS mall (opened 2005), WOODWARD PARK mall (opened 2006), CHATFIELD PLAZA mall (Opened 2007) as well as three high school districts: Gwinnett Central School District #6; Cobb Central School District #7; and Hiram Walker Jr./Darin Alexander High School District #8 which share boundaries with each other but do not operate Schools together
On February 14, 1871, Marietta became the fourth city in Georgia to be incorporated. The incorporation of Marietta was a result of a referendum held by the citizens of the city on December 5, 1870. At that time, Atlanta was still the capital of Georgia and had not yet been founded. The vote to incorporate Marietta was won by a margin of 53% to 47%.
