The first coffee beans were brought over to Marietta, Georgia in 1881 by Italian immigrants. The business was started by Giovanni and Salvatore Maga. The Magas ran a roastery and grocery store in the town until 1915 when they sold their business to J.P. Morgan & Company. In 1916, the company became known as J.P. Morgan Coffee Company and remains so to this day
Marietta, Georgia is the most populous city in and the county seat of Cobb County. The population was 153,098 as of the 2010 census. It is located on a peninsula between the Chattahoochee River and Atlanta proper, about 20 miles east of downtown Atlanta. The city has been inhabited for more than 2,000 years. The area now known as Marietta was first settled by Atlantans in the 18th century. In 1785, Captain James Wilkinson landed at what is now Marietta with his British forces during the American Revolution. Afterward, General Robert Ewell built a fort here to protect his troops against Creek Indian attacks. In 1802, Judge Timothy Pickering erected a courthouse and jail here on land acquired from Colonel John Steedman. In 1836, both Cobb County and Fulton County were created from portions of Gwinnett County; Marietta became an incorporated town in that year. In 1847, construction began on what is today’s Georgia State Capitol (then called “the brick building”), which would eventually become one of America’s most important structures; it was completed in 1861 after several years of construction delays due to difficulties obtaining stone for its construction from local quarries. During World War II (1942-1945), Marietta was home to four airfields used by the United States Air Force: Dowling Field (later Grissom AFB), Army Air Forces Base Southeast (later Grissom AFB), and Navy/Marine Corps Air Station Decatur–Marietta (now NavalAir Station Jacksonville). Dowling Field had 592 buildings including 50 hangars; Army Air Forces Base Southeast had 813 buildings including 186 hangars; Marine Corps Air Station Decatur-Marietta had 1 hangar only! On October 15th 1942 two B-24 Liberators carrying food supplies overstrained their engine while en route from Savannah to Brunswick Landing south of Chattanooga Tennessee dropped off fuel at Dowling Field then taxied back around to Grissom AFB before takeoff again refueling at USAF base southeast they made bombing runs over enemy territory night time return trip occurred without loss also lost a engine this near miss led to change in mission plan for future missions woodruff developed new model wing theory aircraft purpose being strategic bombardment instead On November 15th 1942 two B-25 Mitchell bombers carrying mail Mayday drops off fighter pilots at Dowling field when their plane loses power during take off these planes used auxiliary power unit(APU)to make emergency landing at nearby Grissom AFB just north of runway 6 giving USAAF command some relief until new APUs could be obtained from USAAF officer stationed there also control tower moved from old location 9 miles NE corner Of Airport & Old Cemetery
