The town of Marietta was founded in 1821 by John Brown and his family. The community was named after Colonel James Wilkinson, who had donated land to the town. The first white settler in Marietta was George Mercer, who arrived in 1825. In 1830, the population of Marietta numbered seventy-two people. By 1840, the population had increased to one hundred and thirty-six people. In 1847, John Brown died and his family bequeathed their entire estate to Marietta for development purposes. The first store in Marietta opened its doors on May 1, 1847. By 1865, there were four stores in the community. In 1907, a post office was established at Marietta with Fenton Waddell as the first mail carrier. During World War I, MarietTA served as an airfield for United States forces during the war effort; it also housed a munitions factory used by American munitions manufacturer Boeing Co.; however, most of this activity ceased after 1918 when America entered World War II. The economy ofMarietta changed during the 1970s with heavy industry moving out of town while new businesses started up such as video game developers Rare Inc., Georgia Power Company (now Georgia Power), and Coca Cola Bottling plant which began operations in 1974 making it one of the most heavily industrialized communities east of Atlanta
