Coffee has been brewed in Macon, Georgia for over a century. The first recorded coffee beans were roasted on the site of what is now the McNary School in 1865. It wasn't until 1876 that a small mill was built on the east side of town and began to produce coffee. In 1912, the first grocery store in Macon opened and started selling coffee. By 1938, there were four coffee shops in town and one roastery. In 1949, the first drive-through window was opened in town and by 1957, all five local roasters had joined forces to form The Coffee Company Limited. In 1978, The Coffee Company was acquired by Peet's Coffee Corporation which continued to operate it as an independent business until 1990 when it merged with Jannus Brothers Brewing Company Incorporated (JBBC). Since 1990, JBBC has been operating as part of Peet'sowned caffeine empire which includes more than 400 retail stores across North America including locations throughout Macon County. In 1892, a group of farmers in Macon started to grow coffee. The first beans were picked by hand on the family farm. In 1898, the first machine was built for roasting coffee. By 1912, a café had been established and business grew rapidly. The local paper reported in 1916 that "Macon's most popular enterprise is the Gullah Coffee House, which has been open since 1913." In 1919, an electric plant was built and production began to increase. By 1925, Macon had become one of the leading cities in America for coffee exports. In 1933, a brand new mill was built and production increased again until 1945 when it closed due to World War II. Macon is a city in Georgia. The population was 23,623 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Macon County and has a population of 64,902 as of 2016. The city is located on the west side of the state, about 55 miles (89 km) north-northwest of Atlanta and south-southwest of Savannah. The first permanent European settlers in what became Macon County were French Huguenots who arrived in 1730. They founded Southeastern Point on a high bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River and began to cultivate tobacco crops. In 1819 they moved their plantation to what is now downtown Macon after purchase from James Gadsden by General Andrew Jackson for $2 million. They named it Gadsden Purchase after General Jackson's father-in-law, Thomas Gadsden, Jr., one of Georgia's earliest landholders and an early settler in that area. In 1825 Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest granted title to 1,500 acres (560 ha) along the Chattahoochee River to Captain John Hogg for his " Donation Land Office," which functioned as a preliminary step towards becoming a town site. This gift would become Macon when Hogg donated land for township formation on December 12, 1827; only Presbyterian ministers could vote in those days without qualifications such as wealth or education beyond reading piety books from church pews at home evening services! Macon, Georgia is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Macon County. The population was 46,574 at the 2010 census. Macon is the third-largest city in Georgia after Atlanta and Savannah, with a population of over 150,000 people as of 2018. The first permanent European settler in what would become Macon was George Rogers Clark on February 17, 1785 when he and about 100 others founded an outpost on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur Street. It was not until 1801 that a more permanent settlement was made at Point Lookout on the river's east bank which became known as "Macon." In 1802/3, General Andrew Jackson'sArmy burned down Point Lookout to prevent its capture by Native Americans who had been living there for years. In 1813/14 Cherokee forces led by warriors Musa Yell painted their arrows with white paint to dissuade American settlers from invading their homeland during the Creek War; this event is still commemorated annually by Flag Day in Macon County. In 1820 John Covington established what became known as "Covington Plantation" on land now part of downtown Macon. president James Kenedy bought 5 square miles (12 km2) northeast of town in 1830 for $5 per acre (0·24 ha). within two years Kenedy had developed it into one of Mobile’s most prosperous areas with cotton plantations and brickyards producing bricks for local buildings and other products for export to New Orleans via steamboats up the Alabama River. African American enrollment increased dramatically through federally funded public works programs such as Turner Highwayproject which improved infrastructure including new schools, hospitals, roadsides etc., but also created segregated neighborhoods characterized today as innercity ghettos outside traditional black districts such as Jackson Heights or Auburn Hills . Macon, Georgia was founded in 1795 by General James Wright and his wife, Nancy. The city was named for George Washington's home on the Chattahoochee River. Macon became an important railroad center in the early 1800s, and its location made it a major player in the cotton industry. In 1859, Governor Andrew Johnson ordered the removal of all Native American Indians from east Georgia to Texas. Macon did not follow suit and continued to maintain relations with its Native Americans. In 1885, Macon annexed part of Muscogee County and became known as the "City of Muscogee."
