The Macon, Georgia Army National Guard's history began in 1828 when a group of thirteen men under the command of Colonel George Washington organized a militia to serve in the Georgia Revolution. In 1902, the First Macon Infantry Regiment was organized and served as one of three Rifle Regiments within the Georgia National Guard until 1959. The Regiment was redesignated as the Sixth Infantry Battalion on 1/1/1964 and remained with that name until it became an Armoured Company on 12/9/1999. After being reactivated on 9/15/2002, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (Airmobile) was activated as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (Airmobile) on 6/5/2003. On 8/4/2005, Command Post Battery (CPB) was activation with two guns at Camp Butler which is now known asFort Benning Barracks Annexe. On 10 October 1938, during World War II, Lieutenant General James Vann Jones ordered all Regular Army units in Georgia to mobilize for war because of concerns over Nazi Germany's potential aggression against America. This order constituted an initial mobilization campaign known as "Operation Overlord" and activated 3 battalions from each regiment: One battalion from each of the First 2 artillery regiments were mobilized; 1 battalion each of Engineer Companies A & B were mobilized; 1 battalion each of Signal Companies C-D were mobilized; 5 companies totaling 33 officers and enlisted men were mobilized including 2 brigades plus associated support elements such as medical teams; 16 tanks were mobilized at Fort Richardson; 4 artillery batteries were activated also but only two batteries operational by September 1939. In 1944 Major General Edwin Momyer relieved Major General Gaston Epps who had been commander since 1942 due to his advanced age. At this time there existed no Mobile Brigade Commander within either army so Brigadier General William Pemberton assumed command from Major General Gaston Epps effective 9 November 1944 while at Fort Polk Louisiana along with His Excellency’s Air Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory commanding RAF No 417 Group RAF Bomber Command France who flew supply drops for Eighth Army throughout Operation Market Garden . Upon orders arrival back home MacArthur said “I do not want any more help from these fellows – they have done enough for us” Army manpower peaked in 1945 at 269,000 Americans but declined precipitously following cessation of hostilities due to draft boards refusing service tropics active duty infantrymen aged 19 or younger while other services allowed exemption eldest son or brother Enlisted man 21 years old or older regardless educational level he attained He had already completed high school but forces four years senior upon enlistment compared To eleven years junior enlisted man Draft Board reasons included Lack Of Physical Endurance Most troops then serving over Twenty Years old physically Could no longer serve beyond They Were So discontinuous With Service AndHad Lost All Interest In It By Now You Can Get Your Own Wife Or Girlfriend Just As Well I Do Not Care If You Are A Marinehellor A Soldier Of The United States Of America least Government Money Was Spent On Me Since I Am Not Going To Serve Anymore When I Get Out My Money Is going To Be More Like What You Get Back Home Where People Don't Mind If You Don't Have Anything To wear Or Use There bathrooms But We Won't Let You Live So Long As You Don't Cause Us Problems When MacArthur left for Japan he ordered all military units except those earmarked for occupation duty to demobilize save those needed for occupation duties only These remaining troops formed what became known as Military Forces Pacific Area which consisted mostly of veteran Japanese American veterans unable or unwilling to return home proper military uniforms so they dressed like civilians Radically different than U.S service members Many people viewed this arrangement with suspicion thinking Why would our own people let some Europeans Controls Our Country? After returning home MacArthur disbanded both services Active Duty Cavalry Troops became Militia while Reserve Officers Training Corps became Officer Candidate School whereupon many officers lost their commissions due to Featherston invasion in 1951 however mostturned proactively seeking commission once again Once Peaceful returned Forgot All About It! As part of World War II, the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment was again called to duty and participated in battles such as Normandy and southern Germany before being demobilized on September 15th 1945. Today, the MaconArmy National Guard remains an important part ofGeorgia's defense system with its unique lineage and history. The unit's tradition of drill excellence has led it to become one ofthe most decorated military units in Georgia history.
