Macon, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,788 at the 2010 census. Macon is the county seat of Fulton County. The community of Macon was founded in 1824 by Captain John Smith and his party as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. It was named for General James Macon, who had served in the American Revolution and afterwards represented Georgia in Congress from 1794 to 1800. In 1828, Captain John Smith's son-in-law Samuel Rogers established a flour mill here and it became one ofGeorgia's leading businesses. In 1830, Swenzer & Company began Manufacturing Crystals from lumber that had been cut down near Fort Cobbler on the Chattahoochee River; they continued to do so until 1906. In 1838, Macon Academy (now known as Morehouse College) was opened as a primary school. The first students were taught by Reverend Augustus Berryman and Drury Lewis Woodruff; later Revs Willis Hogg and Ebenezer Higgins also taught there. In 1855, more than two hundred acres (100 hectares) of land were purchased for macadam road construction within what is today the downtown core of Macon; this area now includes most of downtown with only a few exceptions remaining including churches which remain after being moved elsewhere during freeway construction over the years). Macon saw rapid growth due to its strategic location: it lay between Atlanta and Savannah on three main rivers—the Chattahoochee (to the north), Roanoke (to the east), and Flint River (to the west)—and could be reached by wagon or carriage within minutes or hoursdepending on which way you turned off State Road 11A south from Athens into Fulton County[1]. By 1860, more than 4500 people lived in Macon,[2] making it one of Georgia's fastest growing communities.[3] The macadam road construction boom led to an increase in crime because criminals could easily move around without fear of being traced back to their movements; accordingly, many institutions such as schools and hospitals were built with series wall security systems which allowed access only through approved individuals/groups[4], serving as deterrents against crime for decades to come. In 1865–66 Governor Zebulon Buford ordered all state prisons closed because he felt that they were not meeting public prison standards[5]. As part of President Ulysses S Grant's " Reconstruction" era effort throughout America,[6], officials increased funding for education programs while crackdown efforts migrated from law enforcement to social services such as welfare provision[7],[8]. Finally following World War II when federal troops returned home following campaigns in Southeast Asia,[9],[10],macaronians welcomed them with open arms with many businesses immediately reopening after reconstruction ended several months later[11]; however violence did not disappear completely but instead slowly decreased until well into the 1960s when crime rates again began increasing rapidly once again due largely to new methamphetamine addiction trends across much of America[12]). Although economic prosperity has returned since 2000,[13], homicides have also increased recently especially around nightlife areas such as Decatur Street where gangs have taken up turf warfare particularly targeting recent immigrants living below poverty lines who are vulnerable targets for extortionate activities
