In 1948-1949 alone over 100 businesses moved from North Carolina to South Georgia due to cheap labor availability caused by World War II shortages of skilled workers elsewhere in America." The city continued to grow rapidly throughout the 1950s thanks largely to development around Naval Station Savannah (then NAS Jacksonville) - homeport for both UH-2C helicopters and Mine Countermeasure Squadron Two (MCM2). With more than 1 million people living within downtown boundaries by 1970 – making it one ofAmerica’s fastest growing cities – Naval Station Savannah also became homeport for TRICOM (the National Security Agency), later renamed NSA/CSS (National Security Communications Services). Today NAS Savannah is one of only two American naval stations still functioning fully as a Fleet Support Activity (FSA) - responsible for providing essential logistics support across all fifty states and Puerto Rico - while also hosting numerous civilian agencies conducting surveillance operations under Title 10 United States Code sections 622(a)(1) through 627(d).
