The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1855 by General James H. Logan and his wife Charity as a small community on the east side of the Chattahoochee River. The name "Loganville" comes from General Logan's brother-in-law, Colonel John A. Logan (1802–72), who had served as military governor of Georgia during the American Civil War and helped organize its military forces. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest traveled to Loganville to purchase arms from local merchants and residents for use against Union troops stationed nearby at Fort Sumter on Savannah Bay. After Forrest's raid into central Georgia that year resulted in several deaths among civilians and damage to several homes in town, many residents chose not to support secessionist efforts during the early months of the war. However, when Confederate forces began an open assault on Union positions near Janesville Bridge on October 14, 1861—the first time an attack against Union targets had been executed within what would become known as East Tennessee—many locals hastened to offer help with munitions and food supplies to their southern kinfolk fighting alongside their Northern counterparts.
