Loganville is a small town in north Georgia. It was founded in 1824 by John Logan and his wife, Margaret. The town is named for the Logan family, which ranched in the area before it became a Settlement. In 1830, local resident James Smith platted the townsite on land that now includes much of downtown Loganville. The first settler to arrive in Loganville was John Logan. He and his wife, Margaret, arrived here from Kentucky around 1830. They homesteaded a piece of land that would later become downtown Loganville. The Logans ran a small farm here until they sold it to Captain Philip Walton in 1836-37. In 1868, after Hugh Lawson died suddenly while out hunting near present-day Decatur Street and Court House Road, his widow took over property adjoining her husband's holdings within the limits of what is now downtown Loganville. Named for Hugh Lawson Jr., this tract of land became known as Mrs. Lawson's Parkland after she donated it to the city of Atlanta in 1870 as part of an act providing open space for citizens within city limits during its formative years (the first parkland designation in Atlanta). Mrs. Lawson's Parkland housedAtlanta's first municipal waterworks from its inception until 1886 when it was transferred to Fulton County public works under Mayor Joseph Medlock Jr.'s administration (see History of Fulton County). In 1861-62, local white male farmers began moving into northeast Georgia due to advancing frontier technology and railroad construction; many lost their land through foreclosure or acquisition by African Americans during Reconstruction period following Civil War (+See also: Black Demographic changes during Reconstruction Period). By 1865 most all white males had left northeast Georgia for more distant parts such as Alabama or Mississippi; some black families remaining lived among these displaced whites until well into the 20th century (+See also: Black Migration Outcomes ).
