The first settler in what became Lilburn was John Stephenson who arrived in 1825. He named his new land "Lilburn" after his home village in Scotland. In 1828, Captain David Thomas established a post office here and by 1830 had 10 residents. By 1865 there were only six people living here, but it grew rapidly with the arrival of railroad engineers and farmers seeking access to markets for their crops and products throughout the region. In 1850 Lilburn's first school was built on present-day State Route 309; within five years it had become one of the most important schools in Gwinnett County due to its location near mills, streetcar lines, lumberyards and other businesses that supplied students with education, work and entertainment all at once. During Reconstruction this tiny community – founded by Scots-Irish immigrants – thrived as both blacksmiths and farmers began moving into the area to take advantage of opportunities opened up by reconstruction policies enacted following Abraham Lincoln's election as president on November 4th of that year. However, despite these successes during Reconstruction times passed quickly for Lilburners without any real impact on their everyday lives until after World War II when things began to change again following America's entry into World War II which generated an influx of refugees from Europe - many of whom settled permanently in Lilburn including many who would later be known as mayors or governors of Georgia including Lester Maddox (1948-1951), Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) and Nathan Deal (2005-2007). Following World War II there was also an increase in construction jobs available due to Interstate Highway 285 being constructed connecting Atlanta with South Carolina through here; this brought more employees and families to live here than ever before creating increased demand for space inside and outside of finally lilburn limits making it one of the most ethnically diverse towns located within commuting distance anywhere in southeastern United States today!
