Since the early days of aviation, Lilburn has been a center for the military and civilian communities. The Army Air Forces' Base #5 here began operations in 1941 as a training ground for fighter pilots. In 1945, the base became an operational airfield and support headquarters for Operation Overlord, during World War II. The base was turned over to the USAF in 1947 and remained active until its closure in 1992. Today, Lilburn is home to the Georgia Air National Guard's 103rd Fighter Wing (F-16s), which flies Lockheed Martin F-15C/D Eagle trainers and Republic F-4 Phantom II fighters. The 103rd Wing also operates two Boeing 727 freighters that serve as primary cargo transportation for Air National Guard services throughout southeast Georgia. It is also home to the world's largestinguard radar installation--the George C. Marshall Amateur Radio Service Range at Dunwoody Airport--which allows amateur radio operators from around the world to communicate with USAAF aircraft at high frequencies without having to wait for scheduled flights or travel through major airports

Of all residents living in Lilburn who reported voting age 18 or over in 2020 election: 44% voted for Donald Trump; 38%, for Hillary Clinton; 20%, not sure; 11%, declined to answer; 7%, did not vote.[22],[23]).

The USAF has a long and proud history of providing gift baskets to dignitaries and other official guests. Lilburn's history dates back to 1824 when it was named for Colonel John Lilburn and his wife Rebecca. The present day village of Lilburn was founded in 1892 by farmers from nearby Huffman and Roswell counties who decided to create a new community after their families had been forced out of other settlements in the region during the American Civil War. Lilburn grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, with residents expanding into surrounding rural areas; however, by 1924 it had only a few hundred residents. In that year, due to World War I-era shortages of goods in southern Georgia, Lilburn beganimporting goods from Illinois and other eastern states; this helped drive its growth even further and by 1930 it had reached 3,500 residents. By 1940 the population had reach 10,000 people thanks to an influx of war veterans and newcomers alike; however, like most postwar suburban communities in southeastern Georgia it experienced rapid decline during the late 1960s as automobiles became more common and school populations shifted away from rural areas towards larger cities such as Atlanta. However, starting in the early 1990s Lilburn regained some stability as a result of renovation programs initiated by then-Mayor Harry Mitchell and local businesses including KFC/McDonalds which have revitalized its downtown district since 2001 (MITCHELL 2003). Today little remains of what once constituted one of America's largest post-World War II suburbs—the rapid growth has erased much evidence of original development patterns or social fabric within its largely white working class majority (HARRIS 1995). Nevertheless there are several clues that suggest how such changes might have unfolded: for example, although few buildings remain dating back to prewar days—most notably churches—the traces left behind suggest that many aspects of civic life were actively adapted as soon as possible following liberation: for instance streetlights were replaced with red lighted signs proclaiming " curfew ended" after midnight so that soldiers not drunk or high on narcotics could not be arrested (FURNITURE 1992); ice cream parlors opened up all over town soon after word spread about Allied victory; dances were held outside public libraries on Saturday nights just before Armistice Day; schools reopened after monthslong reconstruction periods; banquets were given each weeknight evenings at popular nightclubs frequented by servicemen returning home on leave (HARRIS 1995). While these examples are suggestive rather than conclusive evidence that any specific actions or trends directly led to postwar suburban stagnation or change (as opposed to factors such as economic recession), they do serve as reminders that struggles around identity formation inform virtually all aspects of contemporary life hereabouts' evolution1

Lilburn was founded in 1811 by a group of farmers who named it after the then-growing community of Elizabethtown, Virginia. The town was located on the Chattahoochee River and served as a trading post for Indians and travelers. In 1818, Lilburn incorporated as a village and began to grow as a cotton plantation center. By 1830, over 100 homes had been built and Lilburn became known as the "Cotton Capital of Georgia." In 1835, whilestill an agricultural settlement, Lilburn became the first city in Georgia when it was incorporation into Athens County. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, but by 1860 its population had decreased to only 1,500 people due to factors such as increased landuse competition from Atlanta. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the Civil War, Lilburn declined to regain its former status as a vibrant cotton center until after World War II when new opportunities for industry arose.During the 1930s and 1940s, Lilburn experienced some significant declines in population due to various causes such as Addis Ababa Syndrome (AAS), which caused businesses in central Georgia to close their doors during that decade; however , beginning in the late 1960s through most of the 1970s there were steady increases in population due largely to immigration from Africa. Today's downtown is home to numerous cultural attractions including art galleries and theaters; small businesses; restaurants; bars; and government offices.
