The Lawrenceville National Guard was organized on November 9, 1865 as the Second Georgia Infantry. The unit was originally organized as a provisional regiment and served in the Union army during the American Civil War. On July 1, 1867, the Army of Tennessee authorized the organization of a permanent national guard regiment under the command of General John W. Johnson. The first soldiers from Lawrenceville enlisted into this new regiment on September 17, 1867. The Lawrenceville National Guard has played an important role in local and state events throughout its history. In 1907, the Guardsmen helped protect Lawrenceville from a band of marauders who burned down many homes and businesses in town. In 1939, they played a key role in repelling an attack by Confederate forces at Centerville Road and Kings Mountain Road. Today, the Lawrenceville National Guard remains one of the most active units within Georgia’s military system and plays an important role in safeguarding our state’s borders and citizens.

Lawrenceville, Georgia is a small town in southcentral Georgia. It is the county seat of Lawrence County and has a population of about 14,000. The town was founded in 1837 by George Washington Thomson and his wife Catharine Thomson. It was named for him because he had purchased land there in 1824. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near Atlanta and its railroads. In 1914, Lawrenceville became an incorporated municipality. In the 1970s, much of the manufacturing plant that once thrived in Lawrenceville were closed down following economic recession. However, since then, some new businesses have started up in the town and it has seen a slight uptick in its economy.
The National Guard, or any military reserve, is a term typically used in the United States to refer to the three component elements of the Uniformed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force) which are organized into brigades and divisions. The National Guard was established on July 1, 1907 by an act of Congress as a supplement to the militia of the United States. The first units were called "National Guards" and raised primarily for guard duty during World War I. The Militia Act of 1792 provided that all males over 18 years old living in each state were required to join one of two militias: the Continental Army or the Naval Militia. Withdrawal from service was not allowed without a license from state authorities. As states acquired more residents in excess of 20,000 men they formed their own militias and National Guardsmen became an increasingly common sight throughout America. Though funded by subscription fees levied on landowners and citizens who could afford it, military training for militia officers was rudimentary at best and operations were often conducted under cover of darkness. Militia members participated in engagements such as minor skirmishes with British forces near Boston during King George's War (1775-1781). In fact, many commanders considered militia participation as necessary for protecting American civilians rather than fighting actual warring armies. In 1794 Massachusetts General John Sullivan called out his entire regiment against Ticonderoga after learning landowning patriots had been conspiring with the British army to retake Fort Niagara from Canadian forces commander Sir George Collier. Aftermath of Sullivan's action saw some1,500 militiamen arrested along with arms and munitions confiscated by government officials; this event is known as "the Sullivan Raid." A year later Jacob Riis published his report on crime in New York City which led to passage of legislation titled "Garrison Law" which imposed harsher penalties for disorderly conduct within city limits among other things. This effort helped spur patriotic sentiment across America towards defending its nation against external threats both abroad and at home. State legislatures began authorizing greater numbers of troops within their respective militias when times became ripe due to conflict or insurrection breakout elsewhere in America including Creek Indian Wars (1815-1820), Mexican–American War (1846-1848), internal slave rebellions (such as that led by Andrew Johnson), etcetera; this process culminated with establishment of veterans organizations such as regiments composed entirely of former Confederate soldiers during World War II ostensibly to provide relief goods directlyto veterans camps located across America following its conclusion hostilities overseas
