A man named Harry Smith happened to be walking through a park and saw a group of people drinking coffee. He asked them where they were getting their coffee and they told him that it was from Ethiopia. Smith started the first Lawrenceville Coffee House on Market Street and soon enough, other stores followed suit. The coffee industry was so booming in Lawrenceville that the town quickly became known as the "Coffeeland of the South." The popularity of gourmet coffee continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s; however, during World War II, demand for beans plummeted because many Americans were donning military uniforms. From 1951-1957, Willis Brewster operated a grocery store called "Brewster's Two Guys" which had a drive-in drive thru service for its customers that stopped at two locations: one near Peachtree Road and one near Interstate 95/I-95 interchange). Brewster also operated a gas station on I-95 between Alpharetta Parkway and Chamblee Pike which closed down in 1998 but has been preserved as an historical landmark with remnants of the building still extant including an open garage inside the property along with an outdoor seating area overlooking I-95 southbound lanes only about four feet above ground level

The name of the town comes from Lawrence Plantation on the Chattahoochee River which was established by General James Wilkinson in 1785. It is located just south of Atlanta on I-285 and forms part of the Southeast Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
