Lawrenceville, GA, is a small town in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was named after General David Levy (1763-1836), who served as a brigadier general in the American Revolution and as inspector general of militia in Georgia. The first settlers in Lawrenceville were farmers who arrived around 1802. By 1822, some thirty families had settled here and by 1830 there were over fifty people living in the community. Lawrenceville grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on a major transportation artery - the Savannah River - and to its importance as a center for cotton production. It became one of the most important towns in Cobb County and saw an increase in business activity from 1830 until about 1890 when it began to decline due to economic factors such as increased competition from other settlements within Cobb County and from new arrivals from north Georgia. In 1960, Lawrenceville voters approved annexation into neighboring Fulton County; however, this did not occur because Fulton county officials felt that Lawrenceville's infrastructure did not meet their standards for an annexed town. In 1975, following years of petitioning by residents of Lawrenceville and by local businesses*, Stowe Homes developed what would become one of America's largest housing developments – Stowe Valley – just south of downtown Lawrenceville proper on what had been farmland belonging to John Fagan*. This development effectively revitalized downtown Lawrenceville while also providing much-needed nonresidential space for local businesses* which helped maintain civic life throughout the 1990s through thick and thin*. All told, since 1970 [*(*see footnote 2], downtown property values have more than doubled*,* reaching current levels at $213 million†). Today’s economy is based largely on education*: although many jobs have disappeared due to outsourcing or automation* (*(See footnote)), recent investment has led to resurgence in downtown business activity including several high-end restaurants*, *a growing number of small businesses†(*(See footnote 3)), both professional and retail tenants* (including two hospitals*)(*(See footnote 4)), as well as continuing growth potential especially given Georgian’s increasing embrace of technology (*(See footnote 5))**

In 1915, local officials approved plans to build a new courthouse within the city limits. Construction began in 1916 and finished two years later. The new courthouse served as the headquarters for several law firms until it closed in 1978. Today, most of what is left of Lawrenceville are its businesses and homes which have been preserved as public heritage landmarks.
