The Lawrenceville Coast Guard Station was founded in 1892. The present station is on the side of a hill overlooking the Savannah River. It was built as a result of the first coast guard service in Georgia, which was organized on December 10, 1891. The original station was called “Dundee” and it served as a ferry between points along the Savannah River. In 1915, “Norman” replaced “Dundee” and served for over fifty years until it was decommissioned in 1966. In 1966, “Galloway” replaced “Norman” and served until 1999 when it too was decommissioned and sold to an individuals interests group who operates it as a private property attraction. In 2003, the new owner decided to convert part of the station into an open-air museum with displays about coastal life in Georgia during the 1800s through 1990s. As of September 1st, 2007, the museum has been open to the public for two weekends each year since then! One aspect that makes this Coast Guard Station unique is that both its ferries and their boats were originally designed by local architects who lived close by! Unfortunately, due to budget restraints within our agency during these recent years there have been few changes made to these existing structures which show how important they are to our mission! A large number of donation items have been donated over time from both residents and visitors alike so we can continue providing access and education opportunities for all ages while keeping our facility operational!

Lawrenceville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1838 by John Lawrence and his wife Sarah as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town was named for General James Lawrence (1764-1824), an American Revolutionary War general and hero of Saratoga and Yorktown. Lawrenceville is located at (34.766667, -83.045222). The first settler in what would become Lawrenceville was John Lawrence, who arrived in 1838 from England with his family. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and named it "Lawrenceburg." In 1840, he married Sarah Jane Whitehead and they made their home here until her death in 1845. In 1846, General James Lawrence returned to America from his campaign against Mexico and he soon began developing what would become Lawrenceville into a busy community with its own cotton mill, storehouse, blacksmith shop, jail and several churches. The town rapidly became known for its fine cotton fabrics which were exported all over the world. In 1865-1966, damages were done to the local arsenal during World War II which destroyed much of downtown Lawrenceville but did not kill any people; this event helped preserve downtown as one of the most intact examples of antebellum architecture in Georgia. In 1969-1970s due to heavy development within the city limits (and consequent loss of historic buildings) downtown Lawrenceville experienced significant gentrification which has led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street and decreased access to manyhistoric resources that make up downtown's cultural history including murals dating back to 1860s
