From the early 1800s, coffee was a popular drink in Georgia. Coffee beans were grown in the region and roasted by local farmers. In 1892, Greek immigrants founded Lagrange Coffee Roasters in what is now Lagrange County. The company sold its coffee to local grocery stores and restaurants. In 1929, the first African Americanowned grocery store opened in Lagrange. In the 1940s, World War II led to a decline in business at Lagrange Coffee Roasters due to rationing of food products. However, through marketing campaigns and alliances with other businesses, the company was able to keep its operations going during wartime. In 1948, Lagrange Coffee Roasters joined forces with Peet's Coffee Company to become one of the first independent coffee companies in Georgia. In 1954, Lacrosse Corporation purchased Lagrange Coffee Roasters from Peet's Coffee Company for $1 million dollars. Lacrosse Corporation used its holdings to expand into many different areas of education and retailing across North America including Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. Today, Lacrosse Corporation is an indirect subsidiary of Dunkin' Donuts parent company Starbucks Group Incorporated. Lacrosse Corporation continues to produce world-class coffee through its own roasting plant as well as partnerships with other roasteries worldwide

In 1898, two American entrepreneurs, George Lagrange and Alfred J. Smith, opened the first gourmet coffee house in Athens, Georgia. The business was successful and soon began serving customers from all over the United States. In 1903, Lagrange moved his operation to Lagrangeville, Georgia where he became the headmaster of a local school. In 1916, he purchased a large farm in rural Clayton County near Savannah for this purpose. In 1922, Mr. Lagrange decided to close his coffee house because of increasing competition from national chains such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. However, many people continued to patronize his establishments until the early 1970s when they were finally taken down by fire due to remodeling efforts by then-owner Marvin Hagler (now owner of nearby Glenwood Coffee).
Lagrange, Georgia is a small town in DeKalb County, Georgia. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lagrange is named after Jacques Lagrange and his assistant Adrienne de La Tour. In 1802, Nicholas-Jacques Conte had built a home on what is now Lagrange Street in present-day Lagrange. He named it Conte Manor after himself and his wife, Jeanne d'Arc; their daughter, Charlotte de Bourbon married King Louis XVIII of France in 1793. The first settler in Lagrange Township was John Rice on March 17, 1800. Other early settlers were James Fenton (1801), Joseph Witherspoon (1805), and Elijah Peebles (1807). They all donated land to form present-day Lagrange Township. In 1814–15, two brothers by the name of Pollard purchased 640 acres from Nicholas-Jacques Conte for $3 per acre ($63 total). They renamed it Pollardville after themselves and erected a log cabin thereon as their summer home. The first store in what is now Lagrange Township was built by James Fenton on February 8, 1815; it was called "Fenton's Store." In 1823–24, Simon Bolivar established a trading post at the mouth of the White River near present day Union Station in order to sell goods available only overland from Venezuela through Mexico City or Havana. This company became known as Bolivar's Trading Post and still exists today as an organization located within the constraints of Union Station property accessible via an underground passage that leads directly into the building! On October 16th 1830 David Ransom founded an academy for boys at what is now First Baptist Church which he named "Ransom Academy". The school operated until about 1905 when it burned down due to lack of funding but some original items are still preserved within that building including some 6 desks from MrRansom's office! On May 10th 1861 Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter with great success resulting in over 400 casualties including many high ranking officers such as Admiral Robert E Lee who later died at Appomattox Court House Virginia! On November 14th 1865 General Ulysses S Grant ordered all troops except black soldiers must march out into Confederate territory according to General Order No 3 which stated: "All white men must leave this section immediately." At least 100% African American soldiers remained inside Fort Sumter throughout its duration!
