Lagrange is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and forms one side of the Cobb-Marietta bypass. Lagrange was founded in 1811 by General Andrew Jackson as a small community on the Chattahoochee River. After his military victory over Native Americans at First Manassas in April 1812, Jackson ordered General Robert Ewell to build a fort nearby to protect his flank from possible Indian attacks and consolidate American control over the region. The fort was abandoned after Ewell's defeat at Second Manassas in October 1814 and Lagrange became an isolated agricultural village with about sixty residents. In 1865, when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces nearpresent-day Fayetteville, Georgia, approximately four miles (6 km) east of Lagrange, most residents chose to stay behind to defend their homes and farms against what they thought would be an attack by hundreds of Carbines led by Major General James Longstreet. However, only two houses were destroyed during Early's assault; all other structures escaped damage or remain standing today. Reconstruction began in nearby Decatur following the war and many residents returned to Lagrange; however, some continued to reside there until 1991 when it merged with neighboring Mableton into the current city of Atlanta. The first post office opened in Lagrange on November 15, 1811; general store operated from that location until December 1st1815 when Jonathan Rodgers opened a store on Peachtree Street adjacent to present day Interstate 285/285E). A school for boys opened December 8th1815adingly under instruction from Reverend Samuel Weems (a native of Cumming County who had also long been teaching students at Harper's Ferry). In 1862 Colored Troops from Chattanooga arrived here under Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Hargrave commandeered by General John Bell Hood so that black soldiers could fight for their respective states against Northern forces during the Civil War while white troops remained stationed here as part of Hood's Army of Northern Virginia. Lagrange is a small town in McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Lagrange is located on the Appling River. The first settler in what is now Lagrange was John Hammond in 1829. Hammond and his family built their cabin on the banks of theAppling River. A post office called Hammondville was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1875. Lagrange's first school was opened in 1836 by Mrs. Jane Herrington. In 1840, a log schoolhouse replaced Mrs. Herrington's building; it served through 1865 when a new school building was constructed at present-day Lagrange Avenue and Paulding Road. In 1848, George Washington White developed land southeast of Lagrange for farming purposes; he named this acreage "White's Mill". In 1850–1851, white farmer Jacob Brown platted Lots 6 & 7 near present-day High Bridge Road and Hiwassee Creek; these lots became known as "Cowpens". In 1861, white farmer James Cushing laid out Lots 8 & 9 along Hiwassee Creek between Newton Street (now US 70) and Live Oak Drive (now Creek Road). These lots became known as "Cushing Field" or simply "Cushing". In 1865, after years of negotiation among various landowners who desired access to the river for navigation development (eastern McIntosh County had been lost to Union forces during the Battle of Atlanta), commissioners from Macon County acquired all of eastern McIntosh County including Lagrange from Confederate General Braxton Bragg for $5 per head payable within five years or be surrendered unconditionally! The purchase included 1/4 mile of stream frontage on which developer Elisha Starr erected two hog barns already occupied by him! This single act set off an enthusiastic agricultural development that continues to this day with several mills being built along creek channelsides throughout eastern McIntosh County! Aftermath of Civil War: Reconstruction Era begins Lagrange experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction due to its location on a key trade route connecting East Cobb county with Macon county - something that many farmers were able to capitalize on thanks to government subsidies and easy access to water resources . By 1870 there were 10 businesses operating here – four residences – six churches – twenty-six schools – thirty-four miles of road - three cotton ginners - one sawmill - seventy acres irrigated - over 100 wells drilled .. Agricultural production reached unprecedented levels .. With less competition came lower prices for goods.. However much progress did not stop there as much economic instability prevailed during this time period leading up into World War I
