Between 1861 and 1865, the National Guard served in many different capacities including guard duty at our state capital of Atlanta as well as battles at Griffin’s Mill and Selma Bridge.
Kingsland is a small town in the Georgia Peach Belt, located on the border of Cobb County and Fulton County. The population was 8,658 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Kingsland was founded by white settlers in 1837 as a small hamlet on the Chattahoochee River. In 1881, it became a post office and grew to include a large cotton plantation before becoming an unincorporated community in 1925. The town had its peak population in 1940 when it had 10,000 residents. In recent decades, however, Kingsland has seen steady decline due to commuting to larger cities or other rural areas outside of Atlanta. The downtown district contains several businesses including two banks and several restaurants and stores. The primary shopping area is located along Broad Street near Interstate 85 and King Road/Highway 2025 south of downtown. There are also few public services available in Kingsland; most residents rely on their local churches or schools for access to basic needs such as water, trash pickup, playgrounds, grocery stores, etc. Kingsland is home to one of the largest encampments of undocumented immigrants in metro Atlanta (known colloquially as "the Jungle"). This unauthorized settlement began around 1990 when some Kingsland business owners decided they didn't want their employees living next door to people who were often working illegally but not paying taxes or social security contributions. Today there are more than 2200 people living in this makeshift camp across from the high schoolade Slaughterhouse-Five restaurant northeast of downtown

In 1911, Kingsland was renamed for King George V of England after he visit the area to inspect defenses against Confederate attack. In 1916, Kingsland became one of five towns merged into the new Columbus-Mauldin-Troy metropolitan area and lost its independent status.
