However, the city's maritime tradition continued with another arose in 1967 when Coastal Carolina University (CCU) purchased an old naval munitions storage complex on Telegraph Road from the Army Corps of Engineers. The university used the property for its own Naval Weapons Station until 1992 when it sold it to Kennesaw State University (KSU). Today, KSU uses part of the complex as its main campus housing. In addition to CCU's ownership of Telegraph Road, there are also two other notable instances within Kennesaw history involving navy gifts: First in 1978 when Ponce de Leon Community College gifted a new harbor dredge to KSU; secondly in 1984 when US Airways donated a hangar at its airport for use by KSU's Aircraft Maintenance and Repair shop. One such commissioner was John Brickell (1811-1885). In 1905, what is now Cobb County was organized as a county; Kennesaw became its capital. The eastern edge of Cobb County formed the nucleus of what is now Kennesaw Township while portions of western Cobb County constitutedwhat are now Douglas Park and Roswell Heights neighborhoods within today's downtown core of that city. In 1911 whenGeorgia became an independent country after the Confederacy surrendered during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson designated Kennesaw as its new state capital; however, this designation never materialized because Georgia never joined the Union. On July 1st 1922, following Reconstruction efforts led by governor Elmer Robinson (1910-1925), all white areas east of Decatur Street (now Peachtree Street) within downtown Atlanta were ordered to come together to form an all-white municipal government which would manage services for black Atlantans living west of Decatur Street including Poor Law Homes run by white women known as "Negro Ghetto Houses."
