When the United States entered World War II, Kennesaw was one of its first cities to contribute troops. The city's military detachment, the Cadet Corps, was activated on December 12th 1941 and served until 1946. From 1942-1945, the cadets worked at local businesses in order to provide uniforms for their fellow servicemen. The unit also drilled and trained for war. In 1946, Kennesaw's Cadet Corps detachment was disbanded and its members were absorbed into the Georgia National Guard. However, the cavalry squadron that had been stationed in Kennesaw continued to operate until it disbanded in 1968. This squadron supported every infantry brigade during World War II as well as providing training for future military personnel. Today, there is still a military contingent stationed in Kennesaw; however it is now a civilian organization known as the Patriot Guard Squadron (Garrison) which provides security for events such as parades and funerals. Kennesaw is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,405 at the 2010 census. Kennesaw is the county seat of Fulton County. Fulton County was created on April 1, 1818 from parts of Cherokee and Muscogee counties. At the time it included all of what are now southern Gwinnett County and eastern Cobb County. On December 20, 1881, most of Cobb County including Kennesaw were detached from Fulton to form DeKalb County. The city was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1855 as a cotton plantation town named for him near present-day Decatur Street and University Avenue. The name changed to Kennesaw in 1865 after Confederate general Jubal Early's forces advanced through the area during the Atlanta Campaign and destroyed much of Forrest's plantations north of Atlanta before withdrawing southward. Forrest installed his own military government while he remained in control of Kennesaw until his death in 1901. He is buried there within Hood Cemetery adjacent to Fort McAllister Museum where he also served as commandant during World War II In later years many businesses moved out or closed due to competition from larger cities such as Atlanta or Savannah but some continue operations today including Coca Cola which began production here in 1886 As one of only two communities located entirely within a single county (the other being Mobile), Kennesaw has long been an important cultural center for its residents and has hosted major events such as the Peach Festival, Ku Klux Klan rallies and country music concerts throughout its history
