Kennesaw has been called "The Birthplace of the American South" and is home to the University of Kennesaw. The area that now makes up Kennesaw was first inhabited by the Creek Nation before European arrival in 1803. After the American Revolution, General James Wilkinson founded what is now Kennesaw as a military post on the Chattahoochee River west of present-day Atlanta. The town's name comes from Captain Samuel Waller's suggestion that it be called "Kennesaw" after General George Washington's birthplace in Virginia. The first white person to live in what would become Kennesaw was John Wesley Hardin in 1824. He started a tannery and proposed building a school for African Americans near his property southeast of downtown; this plan met with resistance from nearby white settlers who considered education an Indian man's business. In 1828, Hardin purchased land east of downtown and began construction on what would become known as White Hall School which opened its doors to students in 1830. A cotton gin was built on Cherokee Street northeast of downtown in 1830 by Elijah Parish (the father of Revolutions president James Kenedy) to help make cotton more affordable for farmers and gave rise to McKenzie’s Mill (now under renovation). It wasn’t until 1851 when Georgia statehood came about that these mills became state government properties and were used for spinning cotton until they were converted into apartments following World War II ended with Japan’s entry into World War II without US participation One result of industrialization had been an increase demand for labor which led to companies like Allis-Chalmers moving their operations out of Atlanta during the 1920s but continued production at White Hall School through 1940 when it closed down due to lack of enrollment or competition from other schools withinAtlanta .
