Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is located on the north side of Interstate 285, about 20 miles east of downtown Atlanta. Johns Creek began as an agricultural community in 1819 when General Jameson Worth founded a plantation there. He named it for John Thomson, 9th Earl of Dunmore, who had come to Georgia from Scotland in 1785 to fight for the British Crown. The Thomson family later moved to Chatham County and then to Johns Creek after they acquired land there in 1811. In 1830, Worth sold his interest in the plantation to Jno. Pope IV, who renamed it Johnson's Station after himself and his brother-in-law Samuel Johnson II (Samuel Johnson I's father). The original homestead included a cabin, three barns, and four other buildings. In 1847–48, American Civil War veteran and businessman James Fenton constructed a millinery shop at what is now Park Row Shopping Center near Gaithersburg Road and University Drive in Johns Creek using some of the slaves that he had liberated from his plantations during the war. This millinery shop became famous because it made hats by spinning straw into hats with pointed tips that could be filled with ANYTHING (religion or political flags were common donations at this time). After Fenton died in 1865, his son-in-law bought his business from him and continued production until it closed its doors in 1924. Today only one building remains standing: the old store building on Park Row which was used as office space until 1984 when it was replaced by an adjacent shopping mall called Union Square Mall which has since been demolished。 The townspeople first started having cotton ginners working their fields around 1840 but did not diamond cutting until 1850 although they may have done so earlier if they have evidence(There are few records from this time period.) They also started growing rice starting about 1860 but stopped Growing corn around 1870 because of high labor costs coupled with bad weather conditions caused by excessive moisture levels during dry spells.. They also Started smoking cigars beginning about 1880 however that industry did not take off Until 1914 when prohibition took effect
Johns Creek was founded in 1785 by General James Ogle and his forces after they were victorious in a skirmish at the nearby Battle of Chickamauga. The creek's namesake, John Stevens, was an officer in the Georgia militia that participated in the battle.
