In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln called for Alabama's secession from the Union; within two years, most of Georgia had seceded as well. The Confederate capital of Montgomery fell to Union forces on April 12, 1866 and Johnston's army moved into central Georgia to take it over. By early 1867, much of southeastern Tennessee had joined Confederate forces as well – putting an end to any hope that Atlanta could remain uninvolved in this conflict (Atlanta remained loyal to the Union). On July 15, 1868, with Confederate General Robert Ewell commanding a large contingent at Chattahoochee River Bridge over that stream nearpresent-day Roswell Road (which later became Interstate 285), Union troops attacked en masse across 335 miles (557 km) of open countryside routing more than 5500 Total Confederate Army soldiers engaged only in suicide or fleeing towards safe havens inside Chattanooga and Knoxville– greatly outnumbered Federal Forces deployed less than half that distance!
