Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Johns Creek River. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish people in the 18th century and named for Sir John Smith, 1st Baronet (1725–1812). The current community was founded in 1851 by General James B. Hood and his family as a Mormon colony on what is now known as Hood Hill Road. The original millrace that ran through the town was destroyed by flooding in 1888 but another millstream running parallel to present day South Boulevard still flows through and forms part of its name today. Johns Creek has had many industries over its history including sawmills, slate mines, paper mills, cattle ranching, farming and timber production. In recent years it has been primarily an agricultural community with some light manufacturing activity taking place as well; most notably a glass plant which opened up in 2007 and became one of the largest employers in the town.
The name of the creek comes from the Cherokee word "ajin" meaning "watercourse." The first Europeans to explore and map its course were Capt. James Cook in 1793 and Lt. John Stroud in 1801. In 1814, a group of Creek Indians led by Chief Osceola explored and named the stream after George Washington as part of an effort to unite all the Creek nations under one rule.
