The Jesup Naval Shipyard was opened in 1881 and became the first navy shipyard in the United States. The shipyards were used to build a variety of naval ships, including submarines and destroyers. In 1945, the navy transferred its remaining warships to Japan after World War II. The Navy also lost many of its ships during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After that period, the navy stopped building new boats and instead focused on repairing older vessels. In 1992, the navy retired all of its ships except for two destroyer classes which remain in service today. Today, Jesup Naval Shipyard is home to a number of museums and research institutes that focus on naval history.

Jesup is located on the east side of the state line with Alabama and its capital Montgomery. Jesup is part of Cobb County. Jesup started as a small farming community in 1811 and was incorporated as a town in 1871. The first post office opened in 1872 and the town had a population of about 100 people when it merged with neighboring Decatur to form Cobb County in 1898. In 1906, JesseUp amalgamated with nearby Marietta to form another larger city-like entity called Atlanta. The downtown area has been renovated several times over the years and retains much of its original architecture including two main hotels (the Holiday Inn Express & Omni), four churches (Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian), two banks (JPMorgan Chase & First American Bank) and several businesses such as Burger King restaurants, Jiffy Lube/Lodge garage sales, Piggly Wiggly stores and Sears Roebuck department stores which closed their doors but are still open for business today. Today's economy largely depends on agriculture; despite being one of Georgia's mostpopulated areas, Jesup has only one grocery store - Walmart - although there are numerous smaller businesses that provide basic needs like gas stations and convenience stores. While some residents may commute to larger cities for work or services within Cobb County or Atlanta proper, most locals continue to rely heavily on their own local resources for economic sustenance all year long.
The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) maintains an extensive navy gift history. From the days of sail to the modern era, naval officers and their families have enjoyed items from the United States Navy. In 1881 Commodore John Wainwright presented USS Constitution (CVA-13) with two handsome bronze cannons as a ship presentiment of America’s “victory over Japan” during World War I. The first warship ever to be equipped with torpedoes was USS Maryland (BB-56) in 1903 which was followed by USS Nevada (RV-1) in 1907. These and other warships became known as “Navy Ships No More Litigation Required” due to advances in destroyer technology during World War II. During World War II, many civilians were evacuated through Operation Neptune's Spear - an operation that saw 3 million Americans leave Europe via ships under way at dawn on D-Day 1944. Many supplies and goods sailed downriver for England aboard vessels such as HMCS Niagara ('44), HMC Vancouver ('45), SS Baltimore ('46), SS Tacoma ('47), SS Quincy ('48) and HMS Illustrious ('49). On 15 May 1945 President Roosevelt hosted a reception at Hyde Park Corner honoring those who had perished in Normandy beaches; among these delegates were Admirals Nimitz and Leahy who presented Roosevelt with six cases of cigars each! A total of 54 warships were lost or damaged during hostilities totaling over $40 million USD! The Smithsonian Institution's Navy Museum has a large collection of artifacts related to naval service including paintings, models, shipwrecks etc.. In 1954 Vice Admiral Jocko Willich donated three submarines - USNSS Sturgeon class - which belonged to his father also serving as Director at NHHC until his death in 1959. Of particular interest areWillich's sketches and plans for these submarines dating back to 1916 which show significant progress towards submarine design during this time period! In 1962 Rear Admiral Elmo Zumwalt gave USNS Grunion class Submarine Squadron One "Valiant" ("Sue") offload some cargo into Long Island Sound after spending months on radar survey operations off Labrador coast..
