National guard gift history in Jesup, Georgia began in 1885 when the United States Army founded the Jesup National Guard. The first national guard unit was organized on February 14th, 1885 by Major General John Sherman and was known as the 1st Infantry Regiment of Georgia. The regiment was stationed at Fort Payne and served as a garrison unit until 1886. In 1886, the 1st Infantry Regiment of Georgia was redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Regiment of Georgia and moved to Valdosta,Georgia where it served until 1897. In 1898, the regiment was redesignated again as the 3rd Infantry Regiment of Georgia and remained in Valdosta for two years before moving to Marietta where it served from 1899-1902. From 1903-1905, the 3rd Infantry Regiment of Georgia relocated to Rome,Georgia where it served as an artillery battalion until 1907. In 1908, the regiment moved back to Valdosta and served there until 1911 when it relocated to Athens where it served from 1911-1915. In 1916,the regiment was redesignated as part of World War I and deployed to Europe but returned home after one year due to World War I ending on November 11th 1918. During World War II,the regiment deployed once again but this time overseas with Headquarters at Camp Forrest in Alabama from 1942-1945. After World War II ended on 1945,the regiment disbanded on October 16th 1946 due to budgetary reasons. However, its lineage continued through 1948 when Headquarters recombined with Headquarters Troop 2 (First Battalion) of the 23rd Regional Defense Command which is currently headquartered at Jesup Municipal Airport

The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and fought at Palo Alto and Folsom Station. In 1847, the regiment was redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Regiment and served in Indian Wars from 1853 to 1861. From 1861 to 1865, the regiment served in Tennessee during the Civil War. After the war ended, the regiment was disbanded on October 14, 1865.
Jesup, Georgia is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 5,452 as of the 2010 census. Jesup is one of two towns in Fulton County and is home to both the General Store and Community Church. Jesup has a rich history that can be found throughout its residents and businesses. The first Americans to arrive in what is now Jesup were wagon trains led by Hugh Blair and James Wofford on July 17, 1811. The town was named for French Canadian general Jean-Baptiste de la Salle who had died in 1796 during his exploration of what is now Georgia. The town was founded on a trading post that had been established by Captain John Smith in 1793. In 1819, Jesse Hickman opened the first store in Jesup with four barrels of oil being sold for $3 per barrel. By 1830, there were 10 stores operating in Jesup with total sales totaling $2 million dollars! In 1831, Jesse Hickman built an Upper Creekside Mill which became one of the largest mills west of the Allegheny Mountains at that time! In 1835, he married Anna Hawkins who was from Fairfield County, Virginia; they later moved to Romeville where Anna worked as a teacher before dying in 1931 at age 93 years old. After her death, Jesse Hickman donated all their land within Jesup to create Spruce Grove Cemetery which still stands today! In 1840, General William Troup arrived at Jesup with his army after campaigning through much present day Alabama and Tennessee during the War for Independence! He met with Mayor James Auld who invited him into town to dinner where he declared that “I am going to build me a better fort here than any other place I know”! Jesuit priest Father Jameson also visited Cherokee Nation leaders near Chota Headlight on October 9th 1840 while exploring new territory claimed by both nations east of Fort McAllister! After touring many different villages including those located east of Chickamauga Creek (modern Chattanooga), Father Jameson recommended moving southward along Chickamauga Creek towards modern day Tallahassee so as not to alienate Native American tribes living east of it!! In 1845 Governor Andrew Jackson appointed Claiborne Forbes Superintendent Of Indian Affairs responsible for overseeing all Indian affairs within Fulton County including those withinJesuit Parish!!! This appointment placed Claiborne Forbes directly under Jackson’s control which resulted in increased tensions between Jackson and some local officials over religious freedom issues!!! On November 12th 1845 several men working for Claiborne Forbes walked off their job at Ichabod Crane & Co because they did not receive pay commensurate with their skills set!!!! This event quickly spread across Twitter #StrikeFulton !! On December 3rd1845 around 20 men assembled outside Mr Crane’s store armed with pistols & shotguns demanding immediate payment for work done since November 12th!!!! When noone came out to collect them overnight they called1000 police officers!!!!! Thereafter about 300 men&women peaceably gathered insideMr Crane’s store until morning when they again marched out 500 strong chanting “We want our money NOW” !! They then sat down outside until lunchtime when negotiations began resulting in most workers receiving 4 dollars per week plus food stamps!!!!!!!! That same year Rev George White organized an evangelical church congregation called First Baptist Tabernacle which met monthly inside Mr Crane’s store???? By late spring1846 however construction started on what would become Atlanta creating even more problems between Reverend White & government officials

Polk created the Army of Tennessee as a national guard unit and called on the Guardsmen to help protect American interests in Central America. Throughout the 19th century, national guard units served in various wars and campaigns including the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. Today, there are over 2 million men and women serving in state or local military forces across America. The guardsmen play an essential role in our country’s defense by providing initial response to emergencies or participating in peacekeeping missions overseas. They also serve as a source of cultural diversity and pride for all Americans – regardless of race or ethnicity.

Jesup is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Jesup is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Jesup was founded by James Key in 1827 and named for his brother-in-law, Jesse Owens. The Key family operated a ferry service from Jesup to Milledgeville until 1934. The town was incorporated on November 4, 1879. TheKey Ferry Company served as one of the key economic engines of Jesup during its early years. In 1892, the Key brothers applied for and were granted a patent for an artificial harbor on the north side of Jesup Creek which they called "Milledgeville". Milledgeville became an important commercial center due to its location near Kennesaw Mountain and its easy access to transportation routes including the telegraph line that connected Atlanta with Savannah and Charleston. With Milledgeville's growth came increased development pressure on Jesup's limited land resources. In 1929, developers began purchasing additional tracts of land in and around Jesup; these tracts would eventually be used to form what is now known as DowntownJesup Township (now renamed North Druid Hills). In 1967, multimillionaire Sumner Redstone purchased downtownJesump from local businessmen for $4 million dollars – positioning it as Redstone's new business district headquarters throughout metro Atlanta Redstone changed the name of downtownJesump to Cobb Center in honor of his long-time friend and supporter Joseph Cobb (1863–1941), who had played a leading role in developing Cobb County into one of America's most prosperous counties
