Jesup is a small town in Athens County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. Jesup is part of the Athens-Clarke County School District. The community was founded in 1814 by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Pritchard and their family. It originally consisted of just a few homes and a church. In 1924, the Jesup Historical Society was organized to help preserve and promote the history of Jesup. The first school in Jesup was built on what is now Depot Road in 1814 by Mr. Jesse Pritchard and his wife Martha (née Smith). One of the most significant moments related to Jesup’s early development occurred when General Andrew Jackson visited the area during his campaign for President in 1824. After touring many small towns before arriving at Jesup, he pronounced it “the very best place I have seen for an upstart village” according to one source. Jackson also donated land for a cemetery which helped give birth to the current town name,Jesup being derived from Jasmus meaning buried or gone away (Pritchard) + cuttings from treesmeaning farmstead or settlement (Jackson). In 1924, following World War II, over 40 percent of all US military personnel stationed overseas were transferred to Japan as part of Project Paperclip including many GIs from JesUP such as LtCol Ralph Switzer who would later serve as Technical Superintendent at Stone Mountain Arsenal National Military Park in Milledgeville, Georgia until his retirement in 1995 JesUP has had several notable residents throughout its history including Dr James Baldwin who resided here while serving as Mayor of Atlanta; actor Robert Redford who spent time living here while filming parts for both "The Great Gatsby" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" near where present day Highway 6 meets Depot Road; author Truman Capote who lived here briefly after completing work on "In Cold Blood"; singer Baptiste Noël along with other members of his band recorded their album "L'Amour en Vrachere" here; composer Igor Stravinsky whose home was located down drive from where present day Hwy 6 intersects Depot Rd.; artist Stanley Kubrick filmed parts for both ""Eyes Wide Shut"" and "Dr Strangelove" near this location; television seriescreator Gene Roddenberry used this location during production on ""Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"" From 1949 through 1959 local resident Alice Blackburn served as Mayor pro tempore concurrent with then-Governor Ross Barnett Today there are two churches that remain active with nearly 100 years combined worship services: First Presbyterian Church & Mother's Chinese Methodist Episcopal Church . Jesup is a town in McIntyre County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,985 at the 2010 census. Jesup was founded in 1820 by James and Ezekial Jesup. The name comes from the Cherokee word y'jsupti meaning "the place where cotton is grown." The first Baptist church in Jesup was built in 1826. In 1830, Methodist minister John Elder met with James Jesup to discuss forming a Presbyterian church here. In 1835, Jesse's father-in-law Rev. James Fenton organized a Methodist congregation here and it remains so to this day. In 1854, when McIntyre County formed, Jesup became its first town. It continued to be one of its most important settlements until the early 20th century when it lost much of its population and importance due to Prohibition and other factors. Today,Jesup retains some of its historic attractions including an extant plantation house and several small businesses that are still active today such as a grocery store and post office which were both established in the early 20th century.
