Jesup is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Jesup is located on the Western edge of downtown Atlanta and is east of Interstate 285. It is part of the Druid Hills-Macon–Strawberry Hill community area. Jesup was founded in 1802 by Captain Jesse Powell and his wife Anna as an agricultural settlement on the Chattahoochee River. In 1834, Jesse Powell's son Asa first suggested naming the town after John Quincy Adams because he felt that Adams represented "the best interests of Georgia." Eventually, Jesup became known as "John Quincy Adams Town". The town was incorporated in 1871 and named for General George Washington Jesup, who had served as a brigadier general during the American Revolutionary War. In 1902, Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 160 acres (70 ha) near present day Jesup and began to build a cotton plantation there called Starke Plantation. The plantation prospered until 1915 when it was closed due to Forrest's imprisonment for tax evasion. After his release from prison, Forrest resumed operations of Starke Plantation and made significant profits until his death in 1942. Jesup experienced some growth during World War II when many people left for military service or internment camp- especially women who worked at Army munitions plants nearby or at General Motors' Chattanooga plant which produced tanks, planes and other equipment used in war effort; however most residents returned home once hostilities ended in 1945. In 1951 Jesup got its own Main Street with parade ground behind it on Old Mill Road between Third Avenue NW and Fourth Avenue NW where local high school students participate annually in Homecoming Parade conducted by Superintendent Drayton Hightower Jr.. On October 11th 1961 Jesse Pugh died suddenly while operating a bulldozer cutting down trees on private land belonging to Mrs Ethel Payne Grier along Second Street NW just south ofMain StreetNW cornering University Drive NE; he had been head resident physician at Emory Hospital since May 1960
