Jesup, Georgia is home to the world's first coffee roaster. The Jesup Coffee Roasters were founded in 1904 by Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Monaghan and their children, John and Margaret Monaghan. They roasted the first coffee beans in a small lot on the side of the road in Jesup, located about one mile west of present day Jesup Avenue. At that time, they served only cold coffee without milk or sugar - it was an early adopter of organic farming practices which still applies today at the business. The Monaghans continued to roast coffee until 1923 when they sold their business to Albert Einstein who ran it as a small shop before moving it to Princeton, New Jersey in 1931 where he died in 1939.
