The first store in the town was built on the corner of Third and Elm Streets. In 1865, Jesup became the county seat of Fulton County. The town was originally named "Fulton" after General John Jesup who settled there in 1822. He named the community after his native state of Georgia which he had visited while on military duty during the Mexican-American War. After spending several years building their business here, General James and his brother John opened a store at Fourth and Elm Streets in 1865 to serve the growing community. The brothers continued to operate their store until it burned down in 1868. However, they quickly rebuilt their business at Tenth Street and Elm Avenue where it continues to function to this day as one of only two remaining traditional blacksmiths left in Fulton County. In addition to its retail emphasis,Jesup also developed an agricultural economy that served its residents well through production of hay, cottonseed oil products, strawberries (among others), apples trees and other fruits and vegetables; livestock including pigs、 cows、 horses、 sheep; poultry; and beeswax candles
