In 1915, they incorporated as a village, and in 1928 they became a city. Today, Jesup is known for its agricultural products, primarily cotton and potatoes. The Jesups are one of the oldest families in Georgia and their descendants have been living in Jesup since it was founded. William Jesup was born in 1786 at Jesup Ferry on the Savannah River. He purchased land here from James DeKalb and built his home which still stands today. The familyowned store was very important toJesup for many years; it served as both their residence and their business center. After William died in 1869, his son Jesse took over operations of the store and continued to grow the business if quickly. Jesup is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Jesup is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Jesup was founded by General James Moultrie and his wife Martha in 1821 as a small farming community on a bend in the Chattahoochee River. It grew rapidly due to its location near the railroad and cotton plantations of eastern Georgia, and by 1830 it had a population of 2,000 people. In 1832 Jesup became one of three townships within the newly created Townsborough District, which was divided into two parts based on boundaries laid down in 1785 when the Cherokees ceded their lands east of Dalton to the Georgia General Assembly. The growth stopped after Indian Removal began in 1830; only 50 people lived in Jesup by 1840. However, because of its strategic location and access to natural resources such as coal and water supplies, Jesup continued to grow for many years afterwards; by 1860 it had reached 825 people. After becoming an incorporated town on December 3, 1881 (based on existing land lines), Jesup experienced rapid growth due largely to development around its new school system; by 1900 it had reached 1,500 residents. Thetown's commercial center quickly became known for its industries: leather goods production starting in 1898 from a tannery owned by Jesse Pritchett; electric lights were first brought into use here in 1905; and agricultural products – such as corn – were grown until World War II when industry declined due to competition from more important cities. However during most of this time there was little economic development outside the city limits while high levels of crime occurred throughout much of downtown which made outdoor activities difficult or impossible without security forces being called out In recent decades few businesses have survived inside the old downtown core while some new businesses have opened up around Walker Street but overall there has been little change with only sporadic job growth reported since 2000 In recent yearsJesup has seen significant gentrification with wealthier families moving into older homes along Walker Street while poorer families are moving out
