The town was founded in 1802 on land that was part of the original Cherokee Nation. It became a post office in 1819 and a incorporated town in 1832. Hinesville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Hinesville Naval Air Station. The townsite was named for John Hine, who came to this area in 1818 from Kentucky with his father-in-law, Daniel Boone. The first permanent settler in what is now Hinesville was James Covington in 1824. In 1830, David Bradford built a log cabin on the edge of present day Hinesville Lake. In 1836, Greek Methodist Episcopal pastor Amos Stroud established a church here and started to preach sermons from his farmstead on East Fishing Creek (now Southeastern Blvd.). In 1838, Jeptha Gentry bought land here from David Bradford for $5 per acre. In 1840–41 he laid out streets and erected buildings including a courthouse and jail. Two years later he donated land for an early school which became known as "Gentry's Academy." On April 15, 1845 Jeptha Gentry married Anna Hawkins; they made their home here until her death in 1893. Anna's husband also founded the First Baptist Church of Hinesville (now part of First Baptist Trinity Chrch.) In 1865 George Witherspoon moved his family to this area after purchasing two small pieces of property east of town along Southeastern Boulevard near Swindell Park Cemetery on which they built their home called "Witherspoon's". In 1886 local farmer Augustus Mathews organized a volunteer militia to help suppress a white insurrectionary movement by Confederate soldiers against Governor Andrew Johnson's American Civil War policies enacted via the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in all but nine states including Georgia. Afterward Mathews' militia continued operations until it disbanded in 1887 due to lack of recruits or funding plusMathews' personal financial difficulties caused by Reconstruction Finance Corporation loans provided largely through taxation levied upon black farmers during Reconstruction which were intended primarily for white business owners not black residents like Mathews himself who were actually discriminating against African Americans even though many whites had accepted emancipation into society as part of assimilation into post-Reconstruction America. A military installation named Fort Snelling was authorized by General Winfield Scott Hancock during World War I based on Army airfield proposals submitted by Captain John Fenton Eaton Jr., an aviation engineer assigned to Fifth U .S .
