Hinesville is a town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. In 1824, Hinesville was founded by Capt. John Hines and his wife Sarah upon the purchase of land from the Cherokee nation. The town became a railroad town in 1871. It was named after General William Troup, who fought in the American Revolution and helped to win independence for Georgia. In 1899, Hinesville merged with neighboring Gainesville to form a new city government that still exists today. The first post office in Hinesville opened on October 6, 1824. At one time it had over 100 residents and accounted for 25% of Clarke County's total population. The community of Hinesville grew rapidly due to its location near the newly formed railroad system and its easy access to markets in Atlanta and Chattanooga
