Hinesville is a small town in Decatur County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,621 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1828 by John Hines and his family. This act led to the establishment of Hinesville Academy as the first public school in what is now Decatur County. In 1847, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered all federal offices be moved from Washington D.C., which caused a great rush of people to move to Georgia; many people settled near Hinesville because Jackson refused to allow any internal migration within his own country without approval from Congress. The townspeople decided that they would name their new community after Andrew Jackson's wife – even though she had no connection whatsoever with him (she was born into a wealthy background).
