Hinesville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settlers in Hinesville were farmers who arrived about 1800. They built cabins on a hill near what is now downtown Hinesville and started to grow crops and raise hogs. A post office was established in 1821, and by 1827, the town had a store and two churches. A school was also founded around this time. In 1830, John Pemberton organized a wagon train that arrived from Alabama with supplies for his new colony of Georgia. About seventy people traveled down the Chattahoochee River into what is now Fulton County and set up camp near where Hinesville stands today. Pemberton named the settlement after General James Hines who had led American forces against Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Hinesville grew rapidly during its early years as an agricultural community; landowners formed groups to cultivate cotton, corn, potatoes, tobacco, hay and other crops. Hinesville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Hinesville is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The oldest known Indian settlement in present-day Hinesville was by the Acocas Indians on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. George Rogers Clark's Expedition found Indian villages on both sides of the river in 1785 and built Fort Cobb behind what is now Candler Park. A smallpox epidemic that year killed most of the Acocas, but left their village undamaged because it had been abandoned when its people could not spread the disease through their Clan society. The Cherokee arrived from North Carolina about 1800 and began to occupy this area east of Candler Park about 1810. There were several smallpox epidemics in this region before European explorers discovered America and brought smallpox with them as they explored new areas in 1815–1816. In 1806 John Chandler, an American trader from Savannah, founded a ferry service across the Chattahoochee River between these two towns which became known as "Chandler's Ferry". This trade allowed settlers to move southward into what is now Fulton County while also providing access to goods carried overland by Native Americans who used wagons over many miles of flat ground). With growth of railroad transportation and commerce during the 19th century, industry developed around water supplies such as coal mining along Duck Creek and cotton ginning along Peachtree Creek near present day US Highway 22 (later State Road 82). The townspeople petitioned for incorporation in 1889; incorporation was granted on May 1, 1890. In 1824, the Georgia General Assembly approved the Townsite Act which created new towns in what is now Fulton County. The first post office in present-day Hinesville opened on November 1, 1825. The name of the first postmaster was James Broughton. In 1830, the town became part of Cobb County and in 1835 it became part of Atlanta County. By 1860, Hinesville had a population of over 2500 people and was known as "the most populous township on high ground in Georgia." Hinesville experienced heavy cotton production during the early 1800s and many mills were built along streams that passed through its boundaries; these mills created vast amounts of pollution which greatly impacted local residents' health for years to come. In 1865, a law was passed requiring all businesses with more than five employees to install cesspools within two years or face punishment from the government. This law did little to improve public hygiene and instead lead to increased levels of illness and poverty among local residents who could not afford costly repairs or replacements
