Hinesville is a town in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. The name "Hinesville" is derived from the Cherokee word Hinini or "hollow." The first settler in Hinesville was Ebenezer Hines. He and his family moved to what is now Hinesville from Randolph County, Virginia in 1807. In 1820, John Wesley Dobbs settled in what is now Hinesville and helped start the community's first school. In 1830-31, James Fenton built a cabin on the current site of Paulding Street. In 1835-36, Isaac Brock homesteaded land east of present day Paulding Street and laid out a town called Brockton Township that became part of Gwinnett County after he died in1837. A post office called Hinesville was established in 1840; it remained in operation until 1907. After the American Civil War ended, many soldiers returning home found their homes had been looted and burned by Confederate forces during the war years. As result of this problem, Georgia legislators passed legislation creating new taxes to help replace lost property and revenues from customs duties on goods imported into Georgia from Northern states such as North Carolina and South Carolina which were seized by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during the war years. This resulted in an increase of business for local merchants who were able to rebuild their businesses following Reconstruction south of Atlanta proper (the area now encompassing downtown Atlanta). In 1865-66 Jno Crain organized settlers around him at a lumberyard near present day Old Fourth Road and Main Street into two towns: Gwinnet (later renamed Newton) Township on the east side of I-285 between Lawrence Avenue NE and McAllister Boulevard NW, then known as Hine’sborough Township west of I-285 between Third Street NW and Fifth Street NW before finally becoming Newton again when Gwinnet Township absorbed Newton; while Buford Heights took over what had once been Crain’s lumberyard lot north of Third Street NW just northeast of Interstate 285 where today Buford Highway stands (this lot has also been subject to redevelopment efforts over time with mixed results). The town of Hinesville was founded in 1825 by the brothers Elijah and Elisha Hines. The Hinesville Academy, now known as Emory University, was built in 1828. In 1830, Colonel James Wilkinson donated land to the town for a courthouse and school. Hinesville grew quickly due to its location on a main road and its connection to the Chattahoochee River. The first post office was established in 1831, and the first store opened in 1833. In 1835, Hinesville became an incorporated town with a white population of about 120 people. By 1840, the population had reached 500 people. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Georgia and marched through Hinesville on his way to battle at Bull Run Bridge. Aftermath of the battle led to springing up black men throughout the county who were willing to fight for their masters rather than turn against them. This event is considered one of the turning points towards secession during that time period.
