There is no military history in Hinesville, Georgia as there has never been a military base here. However, the town was once home to the Confederate soldier and general Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1861, he founded the Severest Penalty Regiment which had a purpose of capturing Union soldiers and punishing them for treason. In 1903, General Lew Wallace descendant of General Nathan Bedford Forrest donated land in Hinesville to establish an Army Base here. In World War II, it housed up to 40000 American troops and was used as an airbase by the United States Air Force during the Korean War. It closed down permanently in 1973 after years of use and came into possession of the Georgia Military Park Authority which operates it today.

John Hudgins died unmarried but had five children: four daughters and one son (Samuel). His widow married James Allen who also founded Gadsden; they had six children including John Purdy Allen (1863-1948), an author and professor of history at Emory University who wrote several books on early American history and politics; Ethel Ford Allen (1918-1988), an advertising executive; Coretta Scott King (1945-2012); Anna Hale Hodges (born 1945), a teacher; and Sybil Smith Hodges (born 1951). In 1840, Samuel's brother Charles Henry Hudgins moved to Hinesville from Macon County with his wife Sarah Jane Colburne Hudgins and their three children: Charles Henry Hudson (1841-1920), Harriet Hudson (1846-1927)and Alfred Sidney Hudson Jr.(1850-) All of these families would play important roles in cotton production during the next century. In 1842 Samuel's father Augustus Clark Hudgins settled near present day Lithonia Avenue/Old Milton Road/Milton Rd./Highway 12 South near current day Roswell Road/Everett Drive/Hwy 95 North where he built a log cabin which remains standing today as part of the old town core of Hinesville. From here Augustus Clark Hudgins took over running his family's business by marrying Nancy Mescher Greenlaw whom he met while she was working for her father on land that later became known as Laddie Plantation adjacent topresent day Midtown School District property south of US highway 95 east side just off Everett Drive NE corner Roswell Road

The name of the town comes from a Cherokee word meaning "humble place." The first settlers in Hine's Valley were white men who came to live near the Chattahoochee River in 1837. In 1840, Joshua and Anna Hines made their home here and started a small business selling goods from their wagon train that crossed the river on its way to Indian Territory. They soon became known for their sweet cornmeal pudding which they sold at local fairs throughout the area. In 1861, when Georgia seceded from the United States, part of what is now Fulton County was included within Alabama. As Alabama grew more Republican-leaning, people in Hinesville began to feel like they were being left behind. In 1865, Joshua and Anna Hine moved back to Georgia and started a grocery store in downtown Hine's Valley. They continued to sell sweet cornmeal pudding until their death in 1925. After Anna's death, Joshua passed away as well; he is buried at nearby Mount Zion Cemetery.
