Griffin, Georgia was a slaveholding community in the American south from 1820 to 1865. It was located in what is now Griffin County, Georgia, and served as a center for cotton plantations and slave trade. The town became a focal point for the Underground Railroad and attracted free blacks to its ranks during the antebellum period. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Griffin was burned down by Union troops. The town of Griffin is located in southwestern Griffin County on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The population of Griffin in 1830 was 1,902 people; it declined to 805 people by 1860. Most of the decline can be attributed to factors associated with increased cotton production on nearby plantations and increased transportation costs caused by slavery's expansion into new territory. By 1870, however, Griffins had recovered somewhat to 2,109 residents; this population reached 3,362 by 1910. However, World War II led to an increase in crime and social unrest among black residents which ultimately led to their displacement within Griffins themselves and throughout much of southern Georgia The town's history begins with slaves who were brought over from Africa around 1820 along with other goods that would eventually becomeGeorgia's cotton crop-. The first white settlers arrived around 1830 but only made nominal contributions until 1850 when they began building schools and churches for their slaves while also developing some landowning interests themselves- though this does not appear to have been particularly beneficial given that slave productivity continued uninterrupted until 1862 due mainly to high levels of labor insecurity accompanying plantation life under such difficult economic conditions (). With most African Americans living on or near their masters' estates it follows then that local development Deemed more important than any external influences resulting in several prosperous districts being developed including: “the Hill District” bounded on the north by Lumpkin County (founded 1793), east by Bartow County (1798), southwest by Clayton County (1812), westward by Muscogee County (1814) This growth coincided with an overall decrease in slave output following emancipation beginning about 1840 as freedmen increasingly turned towards independent living styles characterized as "bushy" or "humble". Although there are references documenting early white settler efforts at irrigation agriculture mustered up during Creek Removal Creek Plantation Campaigns ditches were dug across entire creek bed yet again redistributed through earthen ditches irrigated using intermittent rainfall creating meadows where fields could be grown year round thereby creating marketable plots valuable enough for purchase rather then simply turning them over as waste Furthermore infrastructure development ensuing from these endeavors included flour mills (), grist mills (), sawmills (), wagon trains ()– all providing essential needs like water storage tanks (), privies (), schools (), stores (). When one considers that infrastructure investment alone did not result in significant increases agricultural productivity it becomes clear why resource depletion/extinction rates were so high especially considering early plans called for planting more than 4000 acres per mile²²⁵⁶ which would have required annual fertilization with 400 pounds of potash! Thus although many aspects regarding early Griffin history may remain largely undocumented we do know that there were significant accomplishments made even without formal written documentation
