Griffin is a city in Muscogee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muscogee County. Griffin was founded by General James Wilkinson on October 24, 1802 as part of the Creek Nation after he bought land from the Chickasaw Nation for $1 per acre. The town was named for General Wilkinson's brother-in-law, Colonel John Griffin. The first post office in Griffin opened in 1805 and was called "Waco." In 1811, the name of the town changed to "Griffin" after General James Wilkinson's brother-in-law Col. John Griffin of Alabama (the father of President George Washington). The first store in Griffin was built by Elisha Dennyhoff in 1813 and it served as a postal stop until 1850 when mail service moved to Decatur. In 1865, during Reconstruction, white supremacy became an issue in Griffin with riots taking place between blacks and whites over voting rights and jobs. After Reconstruction ended in 1787 with enactment of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution which granted citizenship to all citizens regardless of race or color, Grifonians voted overwhelmingly not to secede from Union America but did form their own government known as "The Republic". In 1924, school board members decided that Griffins High School should be renamed Muscogee Junior College because many students who were attending high school outside Muscogee County could not afford to pay tuition at Griffins while others wanted an all-Creek school because they felt that Griffins had been lackadaisical about its educational mission since its founding. In 1941–42 urban planning experts recommended creating a downtown district surrounding Griffins High School because business owners desired more space for their businesses within easy access without having to drive through residential neighborhoods; this plan never came into fruition due primarily due to financial constraints brought on by World War II hysteria which caused prices for ammunition and other essential materials skyrocketing. After World War II much postwar development took place away from downtown Griffins including several large shopping malls developments such as Midtown Mall (now known as Gwinnett Place mall) across I-75 southward towards Decatur/Downtown Atlanta while much smaller retail districts developed around old military bases such as Fort Walton Beach (now Jax Beach), Savannah (now Savannah/Hilton Head Island), Dahlonega (now Opelika) and Macon (now Dunwoody).
