Navy Deployed Gift History in Gainesville, Georgia began in 1947 when the United States Navy stationed a destroyer squadron at Dahlgren Naval Air Station. The squadron was commanded by Commander, Destroyer Squadron Eight (CS-8) and its purpose was to provide aerial support for amphibious assaults on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The gift of a destroyer squadron to Gainesville came as a surprise to many residents because they were unaware of the navy's presence. It wasn't until after the war that people realized that the navy had stationed warships in our town. After World War II, many new technologies were developed which made naval warfare more efficient and effective than ever before. One such technology was aircraft carriers which allowed for more troops to be used on land while also providing air cover for ground forces. This new technology changed how wars were fought and it is still used today by both military and civilian organizations around the world. One of the most famous ships that sailed into Dahlgren Naval Air Station was USS Enterprise (CVN 66). Enterprise was donated to the navy by then-Governor Reubens who believed that this ship would play an important role in maritime defense. The ship served as flagship for Commander Amphibious Force Hawaii from 1951-1957 before being decommissioned and sold to Japanese interests in 1958. 2nd Lieutenant Ronald Waddell piloted Enterprise when she visited Japan during her tour as part of Operation Iceberg which aimed to stop nuclear tests off Japan's coast. After her visit, Enterprise became one of only 2 US Ships ever qualified as Flagship Aircraft Carrier with capabilities including: catapult launching fighters/jets, searchlights, gunnery trainers, radar operators/plotters etc., making her unique compared to any other vessel in her class at that time! She remained operational until 1993 when she was retiree from service due to age issues only remaining afloat at marine reserve status until 1996 when she sunk off Maui Kai National Park! In total Enterprise served spanning over 50 years!

The Constitution was decommissioned in 1865 and struck from Naval service on 2 October 1868. She was sold for scrap to A.P. Moller & Co., Ltd., Copenhagen, Denmark, on 16 November 1868.
