Military gift history in Gainesville, Georgia begins with the arrival of the United States military in 1801. At that time, Gainesville was one of the small settlements in what is now Georgia. The first soldiers to arrive were part of a brigade led by General Andrew Jackson. The town soon grew around them and began to trade with other nearby towns. The American Revolution started in 1775 and by 1781, most of present-day Georgia had become part of the United States. When America declared war on Great Britain in 1778, Gainesville quickly sided with the United States. As part of their military efforts, American troops stationed here began giving gifts to local residents as a form of appreciation for their support during the war. Many items from this era are still collectible today such as cannons and flags. In 1802, President James Kenedy authorized the construction of a military fort at Fort Moultrie on Dahlonega Bayou east of Gainesville. This fort would serve as an artillery post during Indian Wars fought between US forces and Native Americans. The fort was completed in 1805 and became known as Fort Moultrie after its commander, Major General John Moultrie (1763-1848). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Policy implemented by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, African Americans were granted rights following passage of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution which guaranteed civil rights to black people living within U S boundaries at that time. This event helped contribute to growth within Gainesville over subsequent decades as businesses catering to these new demographics opened up throughout town center areas like downtown and Old Town Square area north of MLK Boulevard/Moses Lattimore Parkway intersection. A number civilian contractors who worked for Army Corps Of Engineers projects supplying water supplies for cities along riverfronts were brought into service during World War II including those working on Canals Zone project along Florida’s Gulf Coast under Project Halyard No 124C known as “Gainesville Water Supply” program which commenced late 1945 or early 1946 while services continued until May 1949 inclusive with completion ceremonies held at Municipal Building on October 6th 1949; formerly GACN – Civilian Aided Construction Number 124C

This location would be advantageous because it lay along two major trade routes - the Chattahoochee River and Uptown Road - which provided easy access to both resources and people smugglers operating across the river.[2][3] In 1865, when Gwinnett County became part of Georgia, Gainesville became its county seat. Despite this change in jurisdictional status, growth continued at an alarming rate with businesses opening up throughout downtown and more residents moving into the local neighborhoods within walking distance of central government services such as schools, hospitals and grocery stores.[4] Growth caused much concern about traffic congestion,[5] but Mayor Worthy responded by creating an underground system beneath downtown called "The Tube".[6][7] Construction began on The Tube in 1969 and completed four years later at a cost of $8 million ($ when adjusted for inflation).[8][9][10] Today The Tube remains one of Gainesville's most popular attractions with visitors enjoying its unique architecture and interesting historical features.[11][12][13] Today gainesville has become known as one of the top university cities in America due to its excellent education opportunities[14], rich cultural experiences[15],[16],[17],[18], diverse demographics[19], quality public transportation[20], friendly locals[21], easy access to all that GA has to offer,[22],and innovative work/life balance policies

The first teacher in Gainesville was Samuel Sims who taught from 1840-1844. From 1846-1847, Mrs. Frances (Fritz) Ritchie taught there. In 1850, Mrs. Ritchie moved to Valdosta and opened a school there which became known as Mrs. Fritz's Schoolhouse (). In 1850, local farmers met to form a regional board of education which chosegainesville as its headquarters with five trustees: Mr., Mgr., Dr., Mrs., Revd.(John Witherspoon) and Geo(George Washington). soon afterwards this organization changed its name to the University of Georgia Board of Trustees (). In 1862, when Confederate forces invaded America, Gainesville became one of several towns within Union territory that surrendered without resistance (). Aftermaths included Reconstruction era efforts by Confederate authorities to reestablish control over gainesville including military occupation from 1865-1868; loss of all property including churches and other buildings during 1865 Union Raid through Clarke County; confiscation of goods by Federal marshals during Reconstruction days (); Klan activity around 1900; white flight following World War II ().
