In 1905 also came the first brick building in town – the First Baptist Church which still stands today at Fourth Street and Millard Avenue NW near Interstate 95 south of downtown Gainville In 1916, after years of planning and fundraising by local businessmen including banker George Witherspoon and attorney Bertram Stephens, city leaders decided to build their own university – Gainsville College – with its own school system, library, hospital and jail (the first such institution in Alabama). Construction began in 1917 but stopped due to World War I; construction resumed in 1919 but again stopped due to World War II. On October 1st 1948 during segregationist policies set into effect by Governor James Meeks Jr., Gainsville Colleege refused compliance with state laws requiring desegregation of educational institutions statewide; this led to a boycott by many white students who attended other white universities across Georgia that semester
