In 1865–1867, Perkins built new buildings at First National Bank on White Street that became home to America’s first department store after opening up shop inside John Wanamaker’s old stable building next door on Broadway (now called State Street). From 1865 until 1903 when he retired from business altogether due to age or ill health,[5] Perkins was president and CEO of Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America’s great retail companies.[6] At Sears Roebuck & Co., Perkins played an important role during both World Wars I and II[7] After retirement from Sears Roebuck & Co., Perkins moved back into his original house on First National Bank Campus where he lived until his death on November 15th 2003 aged 92 years old [8].
