Gainesville is a city in and the county seat of Gainesville County, Georgia, United States. The population was 19,711 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the state capital, Savannah. The first permanent settler in what would become Gainesville was Johnnie Lynch in 1824. In 1827, James Calhoun bought land in present-day Gainesville from the Creek Nation for $5 per acre (0.26 km²). In 1830, George Washington Carver moved to Gainesville from Tuskegee, Alabama with his family and set up a farm near what is now University Avenue and Griffin Street. He became one of the most significant landowners in town early on and helped build many of the features that make Gainesville distinctive today: a water main that carried electricity from Savannah to all parts of town; an ice cream parlor called "Carver's Castle" which still stands; a library; and three churches: First Methodist Church (1830), Baptist Church (1833), and Presbyterian Church (1835). In 1881–82, much work was done on building Atlanta's new Western Railroad through central Georgia by local businessmen James Hargrave and Elijah Jukes. When construction began they named their railroad company after themselves – Gainsville & Western Railway Company – but it folded within two years due to financial problems. The original tracks remain today as part of CSX's Atlantic Coast Line commuter line service between Savannah and Athens/Athens International Airport.
