Gainesville, Georgia is home to the United States Army Garrison Command and a number of military installations. The arsenal located in Gainesville is one of the oldest armories in the country. It was established on July 3, 1820 by Major General James G.stroud. In 1824, it became an artillery depot and later served as a training ground for cavalry and infantry units. In 1892, it became the Headquarters Division Ammunition Depot of the Third Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the First Infantry Division. On October 15, 1957, it became part of Fort Stewart District ArmoryCommand Post (HDCP). The HDCP houses ordnance stores used by all branches of service including tanks, artillery pieces, vehicles and other equipment storage buildings with a total area of over 1 million square feet. The Garrison Command has responsibility for defense of southern Florida’s borders with Alabama and Georgia as well as conducting overflights into those states from Jacksonville Airport

During World War II, Gainesville set up airfields for American ForcesSouthern Air Force Base (AFSB) located near present-day downtown; these facilities are now known as Wright-Patterson AFB. The post-World War II growth slowed but did not stop until after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005 which significantly damaged both houses of Congress; this caused many jobs loss within NASA Headquarters – although some were restored once construction began on new headquarters nearby – so there has been little real change since then concerning the size or composition of gainesville's workforce other than some job losses during recessionary times
