The Forest Park National Guard was organized on May 15, 1903. The Guard was originally called the Reserve Militia and it consisted of members from counties in northeast Georgia. The first Commander of the Forest Park National Guard was Colonel John C. Pemberton. Forest Park’s first mission was to protect the citizens from Indians and outlaws who roamed the area. In 1916, Forest Park became a city and the Guards were renamed as the City Marshals Service. From 1951-1957, Forrest Park being an incorporated city, they changed their name again to the City National Guard. From 1957-1967, Forest Park became an unincorporated community and finally when it merged with Marietta on January 1st 1967 they reverted back to their original name as forest park national guard

The Georgia National Guard was first organized in 1792. In 1815, the Georgia Militia was increased to a regiment and placed under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The unit grew rapidly and by 1826 it had become an infantry regiment. In 1830, the regiment became a brigade under General Thomas J. Johnson, which served as part of Johnson’s army during the Mexican-American War. The brigade then joined General Sherman’s army as part of his march through Georgia in 1865. The battalion was reorganized in 1893 as Company A, 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry. It served with distinction in World War I and World War II before being mobilized again for Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Today, the battalion is headquartered at Fort Benning, Georgia and has been named the 2nd Battalion (National Guard) Forest ParkGeorgia since 1992
Forest Park is a small town in Georgia. It's located on the Chattahoochee River, about 25 miles east of Atlanta and 10 miles west of Decatur. The population was 1,215 at the 2000 census. Forest Park began as a plantation in 1853, and became an amusement park in 1915. In the 1920s it was home to the Georgia State Fairgrounds. In the 1970s it became an agricultural center, and today it is home to a variety of businesses including two banks, four churches, three hospitals, and two schools. Forest Park has a large forest preserve that contains over 6,000 acres of forested land.
