The Marine Corps was first formed in 1846 when the United States government decided to raise a corps of soldiers to protect its citizens and interests in the new country. The Marines were originally called the “United States Riflemen” and served in various capacities until 1861, when they were re-organized as a infantry regiment. In 1865, they became a marine battalion and fought in the American Civil War on both sides. World War II began with Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and ended with Japan’s surrender. The Marine Corps was activated for World War II as an infantry regiment but soon found itself needed as a naval force. As America transitioned from war to peace, the Marines remained active in many peacetime roles before being reactivated for full-time service during the Vietnam War. After 10 years of continuous combat experience, the Marines finally withdrew from Vietnam in 1973. In Forest Park, Georgia, Marine Barracks #2 is home to one of two Marine Barracks that are still operational within the United States Military after more than 150 years of service to our country! Forest Park is a census-designated place in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,751 at the 2010 census. Forest Park is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Forest Park was James A. Robertson who arrived on horseback in 1834 and named it after himself. He donated land to the government for a military reservation near Marietta, Georgia as payment for his service during the American Civil War. The town of Marietta was founded by General George Washington Marshall on November 9, 1835 as a trading post between Marietta and Savannah. When Fort Mitchell was built nearby in 1837 it became an important military installation providing artillery support for cavalry operations against Native Americans throughout the Southeast United States. In 1870–71 Forrest park developer John Pemberton subdivided 2,500 acres (1 hectare) of forestland into development lots near what is now Midtown Atlanta and constructed three schools: Indianola School (1870), Arts & Crafts School (1872), and Stonington School (1876). By 1888 all but one of Forrest's schools had been closed or disbanded because of low enrollment; only Arts & Crafts still exists today as Forest Park Elementary school. In 1899 Forrest donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) toAtlanta city government for use as a parkland which remains today one of Atlantas busiest areas with more than 25 million visitors each year
