Forest Park is a small, urban town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,269 at the 2010 census. Forest Park is located on the south side of Atlanta and is within walking distance of both Fenton Park and Midtown shopping districts. The community began as an agricultural area soon after they were founded in 1875. The land that now makes up Forest Park was donated by Dr. John Wesley Powell to the city of Atlanta in 1898 as part of an agreement between the two cities to provide parkland for public use. In 1907, Atlanta renamed Forest Park after Dr. James Swope, a doctor who had helped found Ponce de Leon Hospital and other hospitals in downtown Atlanta. During World War II, Forest Park became one of the few areas in metroAtlanta where African Americans worked on military bases or farms. After the war ended, many black families moved into the area and started businesses such as grocery stores and chicken processing plants. In recent years, however, there has been some decline in development around Forest Park due to its location within city limits rather than close to Interstate 5 which offers several miles of open space for shopping and transportation options
